GOTHAM uses high-resolution radio astronomical observations to search for new molecules in the interstellar medium. Once new molecules are detected, we seek to understand how they formed and whether they survive to be delivered to newly forming solar systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-container-2 wp-block-gallery-1 wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4976\" height=\"3309\" data-id=\"678\"  src=\"https:\/\/groups2.chem.ubc.ca\/cooke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/53234331765_f0bbfe7322_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-678\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" data-id=\"476\"  src=\"https:\/\/groups2.chem.ubc.ca\/cooke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/PXL_20231004_174448656.MP_-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-476\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ILTS, Hokkaido University<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are working with Dr. Naoki Watanabe, Director of the ILTS (Institute for Low Temperature Science) in Sapporo, Japan, to study radicals on astrochemical ice analogues. His group first used the PSD-REMPI technique to study radicals <em>in situ<\/em> in the ice, a technique we are also implementing in our ice experiment chamber at UBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-container-4 wp-block-gallery-3 wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" data-id=\"621\"  src=\"https:\/\/groups2.chem.ubc.ca\/cooke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_9621.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-621\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" data-id=\"611\"  src=\"https:\/\/groups2.chem.ubc.ca\/cooke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/PXL_20231205_043215183.MP_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-611\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TRIUMF and SwRI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are collaborating with Dr. Chris Charles, Director of the OLIS (OffLine Ion Source) facility at TRIUMF and Dr. Danna Qasim, research scientist at SwRI (Southwest Research Institute) to develop astrochemical experiments regarding the energetic processing of dust grains and icy mantles. We aim to study the depletion of chemicals such as sulfur and phosphorus in the ISM by investigating their release from mineral samples when exposed to high energy radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-7 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-5 wp-block-column\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/groups2.chem.ubc.ca\/cooke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Chris-Charles-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-683\" width=\"268\" height=\"268\"\/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-6 wp-block-column\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/groups2.chem.ubc.ca\/cooke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PostdocDanna.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-684\" width=\"215\" height=\"269\"\/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Momose<\/strong> <strong>Group, UBC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:28% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"201\" height=\"249\" src=\"https:\/\/groups2.chem.ubc.ca\/cooke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/md2_1009_cropped_for_website.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-702 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>We are working with the group of Prof. Takamasa Momose (UBC Chemistry) to study astrochemically relevant molecules in para-hydrogen matrices. Our current projects involve isolating aromatic molecules and measuring their mid-IR spectra and UV photochemistry. We also collaborate with the Momose group on the spectroscopy and photolysis of prebiotic molecules, such as amino acids.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pleiss Group, UBC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:28% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/groups2.chem.ubc.ca\/cooke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Geoff-Pleiss.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-687 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>We are collaborating with Dr. Geoff Pleiss (UBC Statistics) to use foundation models to explore the chemical space of astrochemical reactions and their processes.
